Elevation Certificate Request

Before filling out the form below, please make sure you understand what an Elevation Certificate is used for. If you need further clarification, download our informational flyer, view FEMA’s website, or give us a call!

Purpose of the Elevation Certificate

An Elevation Certificate does not remove the mandatory requirement of flood insurance. The Elevation Certificate is an important administrative tool for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be used to support a request for a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) or Letter of Map Revision (LOMR). It can also ensure compliance with community floodplain management ordinances and determine proper flood insurance premium rates. Should a community or county be in the process of revising flood maps, an Elevation Certificate should be considered by all to aide in the process of risk assessment and premium rate transitions. Communities participating in the Community Rating System (CRS) are required to use the FEMA Elevation Certificate.

The Elevation Certificate is to be completed by a land surveyor, engineer, or architect who is authorized by law to certify elevation information when it is required. Community officials who are authorized by law or ordinance to provide floodplain management information may also complete the Certificate.

More Information from FEMA

Communities must require that all new construction and substantial improvements of residential structures within Zones A1-30, AE and AH on the community’s Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) have the lowest floor (including basement) elevated to or above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE). Common elevation techniques include elevation on fill, elevation on piles, piers or columns, and elevation on extended foundation walls such as on a crawl space.

In areas designated as Zone A, the community must obtain, review, and reasonably utilize BFE data available from a Federal, State, or other source and use this data as criteria for requiring that new construction and substantial improvements of residential structures have the lowest floor (including basement) elevated to or above the BFE.

All new construction and substantial improvement in Zones V1-30, VE, and also Zone V (if BFE data is available), must be elevated on pilings and columns so that the bottom of the lowest horizontal structural member of the lowest floor (excluding the pilings or columns) is elevated to or above the BFE.

For residential structures in AO Zones, the lowest floor (including basement) must be elevated at least as high as the depth number specified in feet on the community’s map, or at least two feet if no number is specified.
